Throw in a beat... THEN WHAT?!

Post by camshiva » Fri Nov 20, 2020 6:02 am

Maybe Im not understanding this software

I load a beat into the first channel, but it NEVER aligns with the the sequencer (cuts it off before finishes or starts again with fricken 3 and a partial loop and starts over or whatever...).

I dont understand how this can be used for live OR composition if it doesnt recognize loop length RIGHT OUT OF THE GATE?!

Am I missing something? Its like IT'S telling ME what I need to do to make the loop fit instead of automatically assuming that the whole beat loops NEEDS TO PLAY OUT and THEN start over. What the hell is a loop player for if it doesnt play the whole loop right after dropping it in! I must be missing something here....

FYI, 30 years midi musician many DAWs; Sonar, Logic, Cubase, Ableton Live, etc.... what am I doing wrong? :|

Hi camshiva!

Yep, you have to manually "fit" the loop in the sequencer. How to do it: click on the channel name, select "Edit sample..." from the dropdown menu. The Sample Editor will pop up. Then in the "pitch" control section (lower part of the window) press the "to song" or "to bar" button to fit it as needed.

Do you think loops should align to sequencer automatically, by default?

Just to be clear, there are actually more ways: Either you set a proper tempo that fits your samples, or you fit the sample pitch to the tempo. OR, if you want the sample to simply loop regardless of the tempo within Giada, try different looping modes available.

I'm really fond of thinking that Giada isn't just another looper that loops like loopers are supposed to loop. I really like the fact that Giada is developed independently of mainstream DAW paradigms.

A while ago I thought that maybe this could be a handy feature to do "to song" or "to bar" automatically if the result would be in a, say, 3% range from 1. This way, a nearly fitting samples would loop properly, and samples that are far off the working tempo would not get a ridiculous stretch just to make them fit. Also, it solves a problem of guessing whether user prefers stretching to bar or to song by default.

Speaking from my looping experience, sometimes I like to just throw a loop at it with no adaptation an see how it fits in the song I'm currently playing.

Interesting, maybe with a user notification first? Something like "Hey your loop seems to fit nicely to a bar/song, want to do it automatically?" I'm not a huge fan of pop-up messages though. Something that can be enabled or disabled by default in the configuration window?

This topic got me thinking about a somehow related feature: the ability to "lock" samples to bpm. In other words: changing the bpm value will also stretch/compress loops accordingly.

That is definitely in line with my request for cue audio output. ;)

Yep, that'd be terrible. :D

Since pitch adjustments happen typically right after loading a sample to a channel, I see a few possibilities here:
- "Auto-adjust sample length" checkbox in browser window,
- Popping up sample editor every time you load a sample
- Auto-adjusting that is configurable, by how many % does the sample can get pitch-shifted to apply it automatically. 0% naturally turns off the feature.

I don't like it, unless a time-stretching algorithm would be changed to something that does not affect pitch. Otherwise you'd end up with a pitch-shifted samples and unaffected MIDI notes.
